Starting Your Sourdough Starter from Scratch

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water (filtered or dechlorinated)

Instructions:

  1. Day 1: Mix Flour and Water

    • In a glass or plastic container, combine the flour and water. Stir until you have a thick, but smooth, consistency.
    • Cover the container loosely with a lid, cloth, or plastic wrap.
  2. Day 2: Feed Your Starter

    • Discard half of the mixture from Day 1.
    • Add 1/2 cup of flour and 1/4 cup of lukewarm water to the remaining mixture. Stir well.
    • Cover and let it sit at room temperature.
  3. Day 3: More Feeding

    • Discard half of the mixture again.
    • Add 1/2 cup of flour and 1/4 cup of lukewarm water. Stir and cover.
  4. Days 4-7: Daily Feedings

    • Repeat the feeding process daily. You should start noticing bubbles forming, indicating the presence of wild yeast.
    • By the end of the week, your starter should be active, bubbly, and ready to leaven bread!
